Nick Gordon drove in the winning run with a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Chandler Shepherd gave up one run in five innings as the Saints beat Indianapolis 3-2 on Thursday at Victory Field.
Gordon went 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs, and he scored the Saints’ second run on a double-play grounder. Jose Miranda doubled and scored on Mark Contreras’ single in the first.
Shepherd (6-5) scattered four hits and walked four but struck out six, and four relievers gave up one run in a combined four innings as the Saints won for the sixth time in their past nine games.
Fabricio Macias was hit by a pitch by Ian Gibault, moved to third base on a double by Chris Sharpe and scored on a groundout by Taylor Davis to pull Indianapolis within 3-2 in the sixth inning.
With the same lead, Ralph Garza Jr. started the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Phillip Evans. But Garza got next batter Tucupita Marcano to pop out and then struck out Ka’ai Tom and Jared Oliva, both swinging, to earn his first save.
Indianapolis left 10 runners on base and went 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.
The teams meet again Friday at 6:05 p.m. Central.
