Saints’ Shepherd, bullpen combine to shut out I-Cubs

Chandler Shepherd threw five scoreless innings and Tomás Telis homered as the Saints beat the Iowa Cubs, 2-0, Wednesday night in front of 5,563 at CHS Field.

Ian Hamilton, Juan Minaya and Derek Law combined to pitch four innings of hitless relief and Daniel Descalso hit an RBI double in the eighth inning for the Saints, who won for just the second time in their past seven games.

The Saints bullpen has thrown 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings and allowed just one run over their past 12.1 innings of work.

Shepherd (2-2) scattered five hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Matt Swarmer (0-3) gave up just one run, Telis’ homer, on four hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked none.

Twins right fielder Matt Kepler, batting leadoff on a rehab assignment for a hamstring injury, went 1 for 4 with a single.

The teams meet Thursday for the third game in a six-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Rob Whalen (0-2, 3.46 earned-run average) is scheduled to start for the Saints.
