The Gophers football program sees potential in an unheralded prospect with no other major scholarship offers.
Minnesota offered a scholarship to two-star recruit Spencer Alvarez of Columbia Heights, and the 6-foot-7, 245-pound tight end in the 2022 class committed to the U on Thursday.
“(It) wasn’t a hard choice because of how the coaching staff has made me feel at home in their program and trusting in me enough to offer me a scholarship while rehabbing a torn ACL,” Alvarez wrote on Twitter. “So, I would like to announce my commitment to the University of Minnesota.”
Alvarez is well outside the top 25 recruits in Minnesota in the 2022 class, per 247sports, and his only other scholarship offer is from Division II Minnesota State-Mankato. He is the sixth recruit in Minnesota’s class for next year and is the third playing in the state of Minnesota.
