Rehabbing Joey Votto sparks Louisville past Saints

Brent Rooker and Mark Contreras hit home runs, but that wasn’t enough for the St. Paul Saints, who dropped a 6-3 decision Saturday night at Louisville.

Joey Votto, on a major league rehab assignment from the Cincinnati Reds, tripled and doubled in the first two innings — coming around to score each time — as the Bats turned an early 1-0 Saints lead into a 3-1 deficit.

Votto added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1 and Louisville never looked back.

Contreras hit a two-run homer in the sixth to pull the Saints within a run, but Louisville got an RBI double from Alejo Lopez in the bottom of that inning and a bases-loaded walk off St. Paul pitcher Andrew Vasquez in the eighth to put things away.

The Saints brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, but Daniel Descalso and Keon Broxton each struck out to end the game.

The teams meet Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in the finale of the six-game series.

Both teams have yet to name a starting pitcher.

The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
