Austin Prep pushes past BC High

Austin Prep showcased that statewide, it can play with the best Massachusetts has to offer.

Will Burns collected a pair of hits and an RBI while Evan Blanco came in and recorded a two-inning save as Austin Prep picked up a 4-2 road win over BC High on Friday night at Monan Park.

Cougars freshman starter Jake Zawatsky went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits while working through a couple of jams.

“We started a freshman tonight in Jake who will be a guy for us going forward but we needed him to step up tonight and he did,” Austin Prep coach Jonathon Pollard said. “Then those types of games call for veteran leadership and that’s what Evan provided.”

Blanco, a Virginia commit, entered the sixth with the Cougars holding a 4-2 lead. In each of the last two innings, the Eagles got two aboard against the left-hander but Blanco struck out a pair of batters in the sixth and induced a ground out in the seventh to seal the win.

“We play against high-quality, well-coached teams to help make ourselves better,” Pollard said. “Playing in high-level games like this help ensure our kids are prepared for any situation.”

The Cougars (12-1) struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third when Ernie Little ripped an RBI double to left-center before Josh Keith scored on a double-steal home.

BC High got a run back when Denny Stiles took third on a wild pitch and scored when an errant throw from behind the dish went down the left-field line.

The Cougars, however, immediately answered. With two outs and a man on, Burns crushed an RBI triple to the right-center field gap to extend the lead to 3-1. Two pitches later, Nick Saunders grounded a double down the left-field line to push the advantage to 4-1.

BC High had opportunities in the first, second and fifth innings to put runs on the board but ran into outs on the bases in each frame.
