High school roundup: White Bear Lake scores shorthanded goal in OT to beat Woodbury in sectional boys hockey

White Bear Lake 4, Woodbury 3: Three periods in the Class 2A, Section 4 quarterfinal between White Bear Lake and Woodbury weren’t enough to settle the score Thursday.

Tied 3-3, White Bear Lake junior Tyler Bishop scored a shorthanded goal in overtime to push the Bears (15-3-1) into the semifinals. Bishop also contributed an assist on Ethan Moerke’s power-play goal in the second period. Moerke was credited with an assist on the game-winner. Senior forward Joey Meuer scored a pair of goals for Woodbury (4-13-2).

The Bears will play Mounds View in the semifinals on Saturday.

Mounds View 3, Roseville 2: The Mustangs held a 3-0 lead early in the third period and fended off a late Raiders push to survive in the Class 2A, Section 4 quarterfinal round.

Senior forward Luke Morrisette scored two second-period goals for the Mustangs (10-8-1). Defenseman James Harrington scored early in the third to extend the Mustangs’ lead to three. Egan Hiber scored the Raiders’ (7-12-0) opening goal in the third and Joey O’Neill added another late on the power play.

Hill-Murray 7, Irondale 0: Seven different skaters scored for the Pioneers, who won their 11th consecutive game in the Class 2A, Section 4 quarterfinal against Irondale (1-18-1).

Junior goaltender Nick Erickson stopped all 10 shots he faced to notch his sixth shutout of the season for the Pioneers (16-2-0). Defenseman Joe Palodichuk scored a goal and added two assists. The Pioneers will play Stillwater in the semifinals on Saturday.

Girls hockey

Stillwater 7, Mounds View 2: Freshman forward Josie St. Martin scored two goals and added a pair of assists in the Ponies’ rout of Mounds View (11-9-0).

Stillwater (18-2-1) advances to the Class 2A, Section 4 championship game against Hill-Murray on Saturday. The Ponies got off to a strong start with three goals in the first period, and ended strong with three goals in the third, two from St. Martin. Ava Bullert and Gabi Bullert each scored for Mounds View.

Eastview 5, Rosemount 1: The Irish scored the game-opening goal, but the Lightning answered nine seconds later with the first of five unanswered goals.

Senior forward Mikayla Kelley scored a pair of goals and contributed an assist during the Lightning’s five-goal run and forward Josie Ellingson chipped in a goal and two assists. Junior Whitney Tuttle scored for Rosemount (9-8-0) on a power play. The Lightning (14-4-2) will advance to the Class 2A, Section 3 championship game, where they’ll play Apple Valley on Saturday.

Girls basketball

White Bear Lake 43, Woodbury 42: After trailing by eight points with 1:15 remaining in regulation, Royals eighth-grader Liana Buckhalton hit a 3-pointer that tied the game 42-42 with less than 30 seconds remaining. But with the ball back, Bears forward Navaho Hughes grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on a put-back attempt.

She hit the first of two free throws to send the Bears (10-9) to the Class 4A, Section 4 semifinal round. Hughes scored 14 points as part of a dynamic duo for the Bears, along with Lauren Eckerle, who scored a game-high 21 points. Mattea Henry led Woodbury (3-16) with 12 points. The Bears will face East Ridge in the semifinals Tuesday.
