After schools closed during the country’s third lockdown, parents have had to juggle home-schooling with work and their own busy lives.

However, as the vaccine rollout saw hospital admissions drop and stay at home restrictions helped see coronavirus cases drop across the country, the Prime Minister announced a roadmap out of lockdown – with schools reopening one of the first priorities.

With schools reopening on March 8, how long will parents have before the next school holidays? And what will the lockdown rules include for the Easter holidays?

When are the Easter Holidays 2021?

In England, the Easter holidays start on Thursday, April 1.

They’ll end for most schools on Friday, 16 April 2021 with children returning on Monday, April 19.

In Wales, schools will be shut for the Easter holidays from Monday, March 29 until Friday, April 9.

In Northern Ireland, Pre-school, nursery and P1 to P3 pupils will be allowed to return to face-to-face learning on 8 March and, on 22 March, secondary pupils who will be awarded qualifications this summer, (year groups 12 to 14), will return to school.

The two-week Easter break in Scotland runs from Friday, April 2 to Monday, April 19 2021.

What are the lockdown rules over Easter?

Following Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown, the rules will change from March 8, meaning there’ll be some more flexibility to keep the kids (and yourself) entertained over the Easter holidays.

From Monday, March 8 the rules state that you can meet with one other person from outside of your household outdoors.

The roadmap states: ‘The Stay at Home requirement will remain, but people can leave home for recreation outdoors such as a coffee or picnic with their household or support bubble, or with one person outside their household.’

When are the summer holidays 2021?

After Easter, there will be a half-term at the end of May. Most schools will close around Monday, 31 May for one week. As for the rest of the school year, and the start of the new term, the dates for most schools will be:

Summer term 2021

  • Half-term: Monday 31 May – Friday 4 June 2021
  • Summer holiday: Thursday 22 July/Friday 23rd July – Wednesday 1 September 2021

Autumn term 2021

  • Half term holiday: Monday 25 October – Friday 29 October 2021
  • Christmas holiday: Monday 20 December – Monday 3 January 2021

Dates can differ so it’s always best to check with your local council when your child’s schools will close.
